Middlewich High School

Excellence in Learning – Achievement for All

Science

Science at Middlewich High School

In Science at Middlewich we believe every child can succeed. Sequencing within our curriculum enables children to build on existing knowledge, reinforces key concepts and facilitates the development of children's understanding. Learning activities are differentiated to assist those children requiring support and to stretch the most able. Spaced learning (revising previously covered topics as we progress through curriculum) ensures our children can identify and discuss links within each of the sciences and across the entire discipline.

Models and practical activities are used frequently to facilitate children's understanding of scientific theory. They work scientifically from a very early stage. Identifying variables and formulating hypotheses, then presenting and analysis of data before planning and carrying out their own independent investigations. This approach provides our children with an understanding of how we know what we know and gives them the tools they need to think scientifically.

Pathways in Science

In year nine children are guided towards one of two Science pathways. Both provide a thorough grounding in all three sciences; the learning journeys can be found below. The combined science GCSE pathway leads to two science GCSE’s, the triple science leads to separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

STEM

As your child progresses through the science curriculum, they will be introduced to the many possible careers a science qualification can lead to. From Personal Trainer to Chemical Engineer, they will discuss what the roles involve, qualifications needed and average salary.

Enrichment activities

In addition to a rich curriculum students are given the opportunity to participate in the following enrichment activities:

Year 7- Lego Rovers Challenge

Year 8- IET Faraday Challenge

Year 9- Adobe workshop (Sustainability theme)

Year 10- Science workshops at Sir John Deanes College

Year 11- All about STEM ASK project

Supporting your child

We are often asked by parents how they can become actively involved in their child’s learning. As such we wanted to share the following supplementary resources. They are fantastic aids for parents wanting to encourage and support their child’s learning. All content is directly relevant to their secondary school education.

In addition to this your child will be given access to their ‘classroom’ via Google. All resources used in lessons can be found here in addition to homework and the ability to contact their teacher directly.

Learning maps – At MHS we use learning maps to support retrieval and reinforcement of knowledge. We use these in class and as homework, you may find it useful to see what is coming up through the year for your child in their year group. We are continuing to develop these and update them through the year so you may notice some subjects have uploaded the first term, future work will be added at the appropriate time.
