Astronomy GCSE is a new subject within the Science Department. The Astronomy course is fully inclusive and offers a high quality curriculum, which matches the needs of all of our pupils. We are very proud to offer this new GCSE with 16 pupils currently in Year 10 studying the two-year course. Our lessons are stimulating and relevant to everyday experiences in Astronomy using the TEEP framework.

SUBJECT AIMS

To show how Astronomy impacts on our everyday life in a stimulating and exciting way.

KEY STAGE 4

We offer EDEXCEL GCSE Astronomy as an option subject to all of our pupils.

OTHER DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION.

We have links with Sir John Moores University in Liverpool where pupils have accounts in order to access the National Schools Observatory in Tenerife. We have just received the first pictures back from the Moon. We also have a live twitter feed @mhsspace in which pupils can follow all the latest news from NASA and ESA to supplement their learning. The PTFA fully funded a remote control telescope in order for the pupils to complete their Astronomy coursework.

You can find our Astronomy Twitter profile here: @mhsspace. If you would like to find out more about our telescope and the photographs taken with it, click here.
