Media Studies

Year 10

Following an introduction to the key concepts of the subject, Media students in Year 10 produce two pieces of extended coursework. The first piece focuses on the construction of narrative and the second is an analysis of the concept of genre or representation. Additionally, GCSE Media students explore a wide range of media across various platforms, gaining experience of different genres and industries. In the summer term, students work on the practical production coursework which ranges from creating magazines or producing news broadcasts to filming drama excerpts. They begin by doing extensive research and planning.

Year 11

Students complete their practical productions and evaluate their work before preparing for the external assessment topic set by WJEC. Recent topics have included popular press, the music industry and TV detective crime thrillers. Students investigate various convergent aspects of the topic across a number of platforms. They also study important social contexts and concepts of ideology and industry. The examination lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes.
